Char kway teow, literally “stir-fried ricecake strips”, is a popular noodle dish in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. The dish is considered a national favourite in Malaysia and Singapore.

Well if you’ve been to Penang I’m sure you’ve seen this ALL OVER the streets!
A little introduction of this super popular Malaysian dish with the help of wiki :p

It is made from flat rice noodles (河粉 hé fěn in Chinese) or kway teow (粿条 guǒ tiáo in Chinese), stir-fried over very high heat with light and dark soy sauce, chilli, a small quantity of belachan, whole prawns, deshelled blood cockles, bean sprouts and chopped Chinese chives. The dish is commonly stir-fried with egg, slices of Chinese sausage and fishcake, and less commonly with other ingredients. Char kway teow is traditionally stir-fried in pork fat, with crisp croutons of pork lard. In Penang, Char kway teow commonly served on a piece of banana leaf on a plate.

I had the chance to make this last year thanks to a custom order placed by a fellow Penangite 🙂
They were a group of colleagues getting a custom gift for their angmo colleague who was leaving Malaysia, going back for good. I was thrilled and excited to make this!

It was kind of funny how they asked for “more taugeh” (aka bean sprouts) and “no si-ham” (aka cockles)
like it was a real meal haha!

These are some of the images I’ve taken throughout the process
Plate is about 10-12cm in diameter 🙂

This last picture looks different because it has been baked and glossed 🙂

I ended up making 2 plates of this, just because the first one I didn’t pile it up higher haha.

I’m glad I took the offer to make this custom order,
about a year plus later, I made the dollhouse version (which is even smaller)

I made the pink plates which usually we see in coffee shops/restaurants in Malaysia 🙂

For this smaller version, I made the plate about 2cm in diameter.
I intend to make it into a miniature wall art – framed in a pine wood frame to be hung or placed on a table.

I do admit that the taugeh aka bean sprouts are a little too big, which means I’ll have to make a few more versions to practice somemore :p

Will make some new ones when I feel like it haha!
Till then!
